Developed by the American Red Cross and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN), NALS uniquely fills critical gaps in neonatal resuscitation training — especially in underserved areas. This program equips healthcare clinicians and emergency responders with essential skills needed to improve newborn outcomes. Students receive CME credit and a course completion card valid for 2 years.

The American Red Cross NALS (Neonatal Advanced Life Support) Foundations course is designed to meet the needs of providers who may be present at a birth or involved in the care of a newborn who may require resuscitation while awaiting the arrival of an advanced resuscitation team. Topics include planning and preparation for birth, initial care interventions, positive pressure ventilation and laryngeal mask insertion.

To successfully complete the NALS Foundations course, participants are required to:

  • Complete the assigned online learning portion prior to the in-person session
  • Download and review the course eBook, demonstrating familiarity with the content
  • Arrive prepared to actively participate in a hands-on, in-person skills and scenario-based testing session, where competency in neonatal resuscitation techniques and team performance will be evaluated

This blended learning format ensures that participants come prepared with foundational knowledge, allowing the in-person session to focus on skill mastery, critical thinking, and real-time application.

After completing the Neonatal Advanced Life Support Blended Learning Foundations course, participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate high-quality core neonatal advanced life support skills, including positive pressure ventilation, inserting a laryngeal mask and inserting an orgastric tube.
  • Improve the interprofessional healthcare team's performance through integration of high-reliability principles in the preparation, delivery, evaluation and outcome optimization in neonatal advanced life support.
  • Evaluate the newborn requiring resuscitation and incorporate effective and appropriate neonatal advanced life support within one's role in the interprofessional healthcare team.
Analyze which specialized neonatal advanced life support care needs (e.g., equipment, supplies, competent providers) may be needed outside of the delivery room environment.
  • Organize a high-performance interprofessional team for resuscitation of the newborn.
  • Support the patient, family and interprofessional healthcare team through the resuscitation with effective communication
