Pediatric, Emergency, Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization
(PEARS)
Pediatric, Emergency, Assessment, Recognition and Stabilization (PEARS:)
A new intermediate course for credentialed healthcare providers who infrequently see critically ill children.
The main focus of PEARS is prevention, and specifically the assessment, recognition and stabilization of pediatric victims at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress.
Course content covers pediatric assessment, recognition and management of
respiratory distress and failure, recognition and management of shock, respiratory and
circulatory management, resuscitation team concept and Chain of Survival.
The audience for this course is any healthcare provider who might encounter pediatric patients in their profession. It is not intended for those staff credentialed for advanced pediatric skills that routinely provide pediatric care.
Course content covers pediatric assessment, recognition and management of respiratory distress and failure, recognition and management of shock, respiratory and circulatory management, resuscitation team concept and Chain of Survival.
The course is video-based with instructor-led discussion and simulation. This course does provide AHA PEARS certification.
PEARS, developed by the American Heart Association (AHA), is for healthcare providers who infrequently see critically ill children or any healthcare provider who might encounter pediatric patients. PEARS is not intended for those who require credentialing in advanced resuscitation skills. PEARS focuses on prevention, specifically the assessment, recognition and stabilization of pediatric victims at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress. PEARS participants develop skills in recognizing certain pediatric distress signs and symptoms using several unique visual cues and working at learning stations. Because typical PEARS students do not regularly treat critically ill children, the course includes video-based simulation so they can actually see and hear critically ill children. PEARS is a one-day course.
At the end of this 1-day program, participants will be able to:
Ø Initiate/execute effective CPR.
Ø Stabilize a seriously ill or injured child.
Ø Learn/practice effective team interactions.
The AHA saw there was a gap in the number of healthcare providers who see pediatric patients but do not take the PALS course because it is too advanced. PEARS bridges the gap between providers who regularly provide pediatric intensive care and those who do not routinely provide pediatric care, but still need training in skills that help identify the signs and symptoms of a pediatric victim in cardiopulmonary distress.
Course Content:
Pediatric assessment
Respiratory compromise and arrest recognition and management
Circulatory compromise and arrest recognition and management
Shock recognition and management
Resuscitation team concept
Chain of survival
The purpose of the course material is to enhance the pediatric assessment and recognition skills of the provider. The provider will be equipped to identify a pediatric victim at risk of severe cardiopulmonary distress and can intervene early to stabilize the child and contact next level of care early.
PEARS Course Prerequisites:
Ø Current BLS for the Healthcare Provider CPR certification is a pre-requisite to this course.
Ø Textbooks are required and must be read prior to course.
Ø Completion of the materials included on the PEARS CD included in the PEARS manual is required to be completed.
Course completion requirements
Students must:
• Actively participate in, practice, and complete the skills stations and learning stations
